Treating Varicose Veins with —

Endovenous Laser
Therapy (EVLT)

What is EVLT
for Varicose Veins?

A laser is used to destroy veins from the inside and restore healthy blood flow to the legs.

Ultrasound is used to guide the laser fiber which is passed through the skin near the knee and through the diseased vein. The heat from the laser seals the walls of the vein to prevent blood flowing through it so that it is destroyed. The dead vein is then slowly absorbed by your body with the blood redirected to nearby healthy veins in your leg.

Treatment is performed in a clinical environment, following a detailed consultation and physical examination to assess your suitability for treatment and to check for venous insufficiency. Details of the procedure, recovery, potential outcomes and cost will be explained in full.

How soon will I
notice results?

It can depend on the size and number of varicose veins, together with your general medical condition. Some patients only need one treatment session. Each session lasts around 30-45 minutes to treat each leg.

It can take up to three to six weeks to see results.

How long does EVLT last?

If the vein is completely destroyed, the result is permanent. However, the vein may shrink initially then enlarge again later. If this happens, further treatment may be necessary.

Please bear in mind that new varicose veins can develop, for instance due to hormonal changes, pregnancy, weight gain or if you are on your feet all day at work.

A follow-up appointment approximately six to eight weeks after treatment is recommended.

How safe is EVLT for
varicose veins?

EVLT is carried out under local anesthesia. Most patients say they experience only minor discomfort , while others feel discomfort or numbness may in the leg which can last for two to four weeks. You may experience some tautness as the vein shrinks and are very likely to have some degree of bruising on the leg.

You can walk normally after treatment – in fact, moving your legs is encouraged to prevent blood clots forming. (For this reason, you need to wear compression stockings for about two weeks.) You cannot drive that day but can resume other regular activities right away. You should avoid vigorous exercise and short haul flights for a fortnight.

EVLT is not suitable if you have large, winding veins.
