Facial Veins

Facial veins are tiny blood vessels usually seen on the nose, cheek or chin where skin is much thinner than the rest of the body. They are a common condition in both men and women; they occur more as we age and are especially noticeable if you have fair skin.

Facial thread veins don’t affect your health but they can affect your confidence. Fortunately, they are easily treated non-invasively for lasting results.

What causes
facial veins?

Facial veins are also known as small spider veins, broken capillaries or facial telangiectasia. They appear just under the skin’s surface as very small red, purple or blue threads or as a patchy area up to a few millimeters in size, or even as large bluish veins on the face,

There is no single obvious cause of thread veins.

What are the
risk factors?

Genetics: a history of facial thread veins in your family can play a role in your likelihood of developing them too.

Hormonal changes: for example, during puberty, if pregnant or on the contraceptive pill because increased estrogen hormones can cause vein walls to thin. Changes during menopause can also lead to facial thread veins, which are also more noticeable during hot flushes.

Sunlight: exposure to UV rays can break down collagen in our skin more quickly and lead to broken blood vessels.

Aging: skin becomes thinner and underlying veins become more visible.

Medical conditions: severe vomiting or intense sneezing can cause tiny facial blood pressures to break. Rosacea puts additional pressure on facial veins which can destroy the capillaries and leads to excessive redness and flushing.  Many clusters could be a sign of liver disease.

Alcohol: excessive consumption causes blood vessels to enlarge, resulting in flushed skin. This is often called ‘drinker’s nose’.

What are the symptoms
of facial veins?

● Facial veins are mainly a cosmetic concern but some people can feel a dull pain or a burning sensation.
