Rosacea

Rosacea is a rash, mainly on the face, that may flare up then fade away in its early stages. As the disease progresses, small dilated blood vessels (telangiectasia)and pimples start appearing. This inflammatory skin condition is very common, more so in women than in men, and usually develops after the age of 30. It is often mistaken for acne or eczema.

There is no known cure for rosacea, but the symptoms can be treated. If the condition is left undiagnosed and untreated, it can worsen in severity,

What causes
rosacea?

It is not known exactly what causes rosacea. A mite that lives harmlessly on our skin, demodex, has been found in large numbers on some people with rosacea, though not all. A protein (cathelicidin) that normally defends skin against microbes may be a cause. An immune system overreacting to a bacterium (bacillus oleronius) may also play a role, as may a bug (H pylori) that causes infection in the intestines.

What is known is that there is a low level inflammatory process leading to a proliferation of new blood vessels around the cheeks, nose and chin). As a consequence, patients with Rosacea develop high levels of facial redness.

What are the
risk factors?

Diet: such as caffeine, spicy foods, red wine and alcohol.

Weather: exposure to sunlight, wind and temperature extremes.

Medication: drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications.

Genetics: a history of rosacea in your family can play a role in your likelihood of developing it too.

Stress, vigorous exercise, dairy products and cosmetic products can also trigger rosacea.

What are the symptoms
of rosacea?

● Sensitive skin.
● Facial flushes.
● Redness (erythema) that looks similar to sunburn.
● A burning or itching sensation.
● Red spots and cysts that may contain pus.
