Venaseal – Pre/Post-care instructions

Before your treatment:
  • Having a nutritious breakfast or lunch on the day of the procedure.
  • Avoid alcohol or smoking for two days pre-procedure as they may impact the healing process
  • Avoid applying creams or lotion to your leg on the day of the procedure
  • Refrain from shaving your legs on the day of the procedure
  • Bring your thigh-high compression stockings with you – you will be required to wear them immediately following the procedure.
  • Take all of your regular medications on the day of the procedure.
  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Ensure to arrange transportation home as you will not be able to drive following the procedure.
Post-procedure instructions:
  • Resume regular activity, but avoid strenuous exercise for 7 days (aerobics, weight-lifting, jogging..etc).
  • You may return to work the following day (though patients in more physically demanding occupations prefer to take 1-2 days off work)
  • You must wear your compression stockings continuously for the first 48 hours. Afterwards, you may remove them to shower, and then continue to wear them for 2 weeks during the day only (9am – 5pm; they may be removed in the evening).
  • Regular walking is encouraged. Avoid long periods of standing in one place. Elevate your legs when seated.
  • Avoid air travel or long-distance car rides for two weeks post-procedure.
  • Some bruising, local swelling, and tenderness are normal following the procedure. You may feel a 'tightening' sensation – this may last a few days and can be relieved by walking.
  • You may apply ice packs to your legs, or take an anti-inflammatory (Advil, Aleve, Motrin) to alleviate any discomfort.
  • We recommend taking an anti-inflammatory daily after your treatment (ex: Naproxen 220mg twice per day, or Ibuprofen 200mg 3-4 times per day) for 7-10 days following your procedure. You may take this in addition to Tylenol in the case of ongoing pain or discomfort.
Follow-up:
  • You will be scheduled for an appointment approximately 2 weeks after the procedure. A follow-up ultrasound will be performed at that time. Additional appointments will be scheduled afterwards according to your personalized treatment plan.
  • Please ensure to bring your stockings for all future appointments.

Sclerotherapy Pre/Post-Care Instructions

Pre-treatment Instructions
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing
  • Bring your compression stockings (20-30 mmHg) with you as you will need them immediately post-procedure. Please ensure to purchase them prior to your appointment, or that you are scheduled to be fitted for them on the same day of treatment.
  • Avoid shaving your legs on the day of treatment
  • Avoid any creams, oils, or self-tanners on the day of your treatment
  • Avoid blood thinners such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, vitamin E, and omega-3 for 5-7 days to decrease the risk of bruising
  • You may eat a light meal or snack one to two hours prior to your appointment
  • You may drive yourself to and from the clinic
Post-procedure instructions:
  • Immediately after treatment, you will be required to wear your compression stockings:
    • Stockings should be worn continuously for the first 48 hours.
    • After 48 hours, you may remove them to shower
    • They should then be worn again for 2 weeks during the day only (9am – 5pm; you may remove them in the evening)
  • Maintain normal activities. Regular walking is recommended for 15-30 minutes per day.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity for the first 72 hours following treatment (high-impact aerobics, weight-lifting, running… etc)
  • Avoid hot tubs, warm baths and saunas for one week
  • Avoid flying for one week
  • Avoid blood thinners for 48 hours
  • Avoid exposing the treated area to sun, tanning beds, or self-tanners for the following 2 weeks (may cause discoloration from UV exposure)
  • Your follow-up will be scheduled
  • Your follow-up / next treatment session will be scheduled within 4-8 weeks
Things you may notice following treatment:
  • Bruising & discoloration – this is common after sclerotherapy, and will resolve over a few weeks. Ensure to avoid sun exposure or any tanning beds/self tanners which can cause hyperpigmentation (skin darkening) in the treated areas. Wear protective clothing and sunscreen as necessary.
  • Small lump or knot – occasionally occurs when injecting larger veins due to trapped blood in the injected area. It is not dangerous, and may be relieved with warm compresses and an anti-inflammatory such as Naproxen (ex: Aleve or Naprosyn) or Ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin). The lump should resolve on its own or occasionally require a simple extraction in the clinic.
  • It may take up to 6 weeks for the treated veins to improve. They often look worse immediately after treatment - this normal and they should gradually improve over time.

Laser Vein Treatment – Pre/Post-care instructions

Pre-treatment Instructions
  • Eat a light meal or snack one to two hours prior to your appointment
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing

  • Avoid any creams, oils, or self-tanners on the day of your treatment

  • Avoid hot baths, massages, or any rubbing to the area for 4-5 days
  • You may apply make-up to the area after 24 hours. However, be careful not to rub the area when removing the make-up as it may damage the skin and predispose it to infection.

  • You will be scheduled for an appointment approximately 2 weeks after the procedure
  • Please ensure to bring your stockings for all future appointments
